ESSEX: Superfast Essex Backs EDAs For Third Year

Superfast Essex, Essex County Council’s broadband improvement programme, is pleased to be sponsoring the Essex Digital Awards for the third year whilst continuing to extend faster broadband to over 120,000 premises in the county by 2019.

The Superfast Essex programme is to sponsor the “Online Retailer” category with the winners of all 16 categories being presented with their awards at the EDA17 Presentation Evening at Boreham House, Chelmsford, on May 18.

Superfast broadband is benefitting homes and businesses across the county and transforming the way Essex businesses operate, from enabling global enterprise to reducing costs and increasing efficiency with cloud-based services.

Superfast Essex is part of the Government’s national Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK) programme to increase superfast broadband connectivity across the UK, led by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport.

The programme is delivering improved broadband in phases.

Phase 1 was completed three months ahead of schedule in June 2016 and saw 65,000 premises provided with access to better connectivity.

Phase 2 is currently being rolled out and so far the total number of homes and businesses able to achieve internet speeds of 24Mbps and above is 73,000.

The programme is aiming for 120,000 Essex premises to be connected to superfast broadband through their current plans with an additional Phase 3 being planned to extend broadband coverage even further.

More information about where the next phase of work will be rolled out will be announced in Spring/Summer 2017.

David Wilde, Essex County Council’s Executive Director for Place Operations and Chief Information Officer, who is also on the judging panel for EDA17, said: “The benefits of faster broadband shouldn’t be reserved for only large businesses.

“The Superfast Essex programme aims to bring improved connectivity to businesses of all sizes around Essex, helping them to make positive advancements and changes to the running of their business.

“Teaming up with the Essex Digital Awards is a natural choice for the programme and I look forward to finding out more about the nominated businesses in each category this year.”

Robin Bailey, Chairman of the Judging Panel at the Essex Digital Awards, said: “A fast broadband connection is vital to the tens of thousands of businesses based in Essex and we are delighted to be working, once again, with Superfast Essex who are rolling our broadband across the county.

“Superfast Essex is a brilliant and essential project and we are proud to be involved with it.”

In addition to providing information and tools associated with the programme rollout, the Superfast Essex website also hosts an online toolkit to help small businesses improve their digital know-how.

The Digital Toolkit contains a series of business blogs, vlogs and webinars on a range of topics including increasing online sales, attracting new customers, social media, blogging and the importance of cloud-based systems.

It also includes a Digital Health Check, to identify any areas where businesses can improve their digital expertise, and a ‘Fast Tips’ download which provides information and advice around a range of digital developments, such as cloud-based Services, Search Engine Optimisation and Social Media Marketing.

ESSEX: Nimbus Hosting Is Headline Sponsor of EDA17

Nimbus Hosting – a company that specialises in providing web hosting services to digital agencies and ecommerce sites, has signed up as Headline Sponsor of the Essex Digital Awards 2017.

The appointment underlines the company’s commitment to supporting the digital sector and encouraging more businesses to improve their website infrastructure.

One of Nimbus’ missions is to allow digital professionals to focus on core projects rather than dealing with “hosting headaches” and the, often, complex details of IT.

Hosting services form the backbone of the internet as we know it, from simple HTML files to databases, all that data needs somewhere safe to call home.

While the cost is important, reliability is invariably the key factor for web designers and developers when choosing a host.

Nimbus ticks both boxes.

The company prides itself on offering a “personal and competitive service” in cloud hosting, dedicated servers and third party applications such as Magento, WordPress and XenForo.

To celebrate their connection with EDA17, Nimbus is offering a special promotion just for entrants of the scheme, which is the first and only awards in Essex dedicated to celebrating the online achievements of businesses, charities and schools from across the county.

Meghan, Marketing Manager at Nimbus Hosting, revealed that her team is “very proud” to be involved with the EDAs and offer two exclusive deals as a result.

“We are delighted to be Headline Sponsor of the EDAs, having previously taken the same position at the Digital Awards in both Hertfordshire and Cambridgeshire.

“To celebrate working with the EDAs, we are offering all entrants of EDA17 a free migration to cloud hosting, so we’ll move all your sites over for you and we’re offering to migrate as many websites as you’d like us to.

“We’ll also throw in the first month free on any VPS (Virtual Private Server) or cloud based hosting packages and this is all covered by our six month guarantee.

“This is just our way of saying thank you to the businesses, charities and schools of Essex who have put a lot of work into developing their digital platforms.”

As Headline Sponsor, Nimbus Hosting will enjoy a range of benefits including the opportunity to present the flagship “Website” award at the EDA17 Presentation Evening at Boreham House on May 18.

Meghan added: “Both launching a new sites or transferring existing websites can be one of the most critical tasks in its lifecycle, but the our team are specialists at ensuring the transfer happens quickly, carefully and professionally.”

Robin Bailey, Chairman of the EDA Judging Panel, said: “Having known Nimbus Hosting from a number of the Digital Awards events now I can say they are a real pleasure to work with.

“They are also highly successful and respected in offering website hosting solutions, so if you are considering this or want to find out why it’s worth doing, I’d recommend you contact them.”

ESSEX: Skills Board Backs EDAs For 2017

The Essex Employment and Skills board (ESB) is to back the Essex Digital Awards for the third year running.

The ESB is a strategic body which is made up of representatives from local businesses such as Ford UK, Raytheon and IFDS, FE and HE educators, the NHS and local authorities. The board has been created to provide businesses and the public sector influence in the development of workplace skills across the county and will sponsor the “Website: Small Business” award.

It will also preside over the “Future of Essex” award through the ESB’s Education and Industry STEM Programme.

It is the third year that the “Future of Essex” award is to be presented at the Essex Digital Awards.

It was launched in collaboration with the EDA team to recognise the array of promising young digital talent around the county through technology-based projects which bring together schools, students and people from businesses around the county.

Paul Coffey, ESB sector lead for IT, Digital and Creative, explained why the organisation chose to get involved with the Awards once again: “We are delighted to be supporting this event which shares our views that exceptional local skills and businesses should be celebrated.  As the digital and creative industry expands, offering both opportunities and challenges, we must ensure Essex is well equipped to thrive.”

The ESB Education and Industry STEM Programme has, over the past year, informed, inspired and enabled over 1,000 young people across 30 Essex schools to work with local businesses and consider a career using their science, technology, engineering and maths skills.

For further information on the Programme, click here:

The ESB has four main objectives, which are:

To ensure the creation of a robust evidence base for skills and to use this to develop an executable five-year business plan which incorporates an implementation plan and is reviewed annually

To support the deployment of the new enabling mechanisms which contribute to the closer alignment of skills provision and business need – including an online employer portal and the Essex Skills Investment Fund (ESIF)

To champion involvement and participation in the skills system by engaging widely with businesses through disseminating information from the Board and by creating the conditions which allow the views of interested businesses to be taken into consideration

To take the case for requisite finance and flexibilities to Government on behalf of all Essex providers, businesses and public sector agencies.

Online retail giant Amazon plans to open a new Warehouse in Tilbury next Spring which will create around 1,500 permanent jobs.

The new posts are in addition to the 3,500 jobs Amazon has already committed to create within the UK this year.

The Office for National Statistics says online sales in the UK rose by 16.7% in July compared to the same period last year.

Ian Geddes, UK head of retail at Deloitte said: “The online market now accounts for 14.2% of all retail sales.

“Not only does this indicate a step up in online spending, but retailers also appear to be on the right path when it comes to engaging with the online consumer.”

Amazon has invested more than £4.6bn in the UK economy over the past six years.
